Storm Response Playbook: Turning NOAA Hail Reports into Closed Jobs

2026-05-06

Storm chasers from out of state will hit a damaged zip code 48 hours after a major event. By the time they're knocking doors, you should already have appointments booked. Here's how to use NOAA data to beat them every time.

Step 1: Set Up Storm Alerts for Your Service Area

RidgeIQ's Storm History feature pulls live NOAA Storm Events Database hail and wind reports. You can save up to 10 watched zip codes — when a hail report 1.0"+ or wind gust 65mph+ logs in any of them, you get a push notification within minutes.

Free, no API key needed, and it's the same source the National Weather Service uses.

Step 2: Within 24 Hours, Pull the Affected Neighborhoods

Open the storm history view, filter to the past 48 hours, and you'll see exact lat/lng coordinates for every reported impact. Pull a 1-mile radius around each one and that's your door-knocking map.

Step 3: Send Branded Outreach Before Chasers Arrive

Affected homeowners are about to be flooded with calls from out-of-state companies. Be the first message they see from a local contractor. A short, helpful, non-pitchy SMS or postcard wins this:

"Hi — saw the hail report in [neighborhood] last night. We're [your company], local roofers based out of [city]. If you'd like a free roof inspection, here's a link to schedule one: [your link]. No sales call, no pressure."

Step 4: Use Free Roof Inspections as the Top of Funnel

Most homeowners don't know if they have damage. A free inspection is a conversation starter that converts at 3-5x the rate of a "free estimate" pitch. Lead with the inspection, not the sale.

Step 5: Document Everything for the Insurance Side

For jobs going to insurance, document:

  • NOAA report ID + date + impact size (you have this from RidgeIQ)
  • Drone or pole photos of every damaged slope
  • Test squares with impact dimensions and depths
  • Code upgrades required (drip edge, ice & water shield, etc.)

The Storm Math

A typical Tier-1 storm zone generates 200-500 damaged homes per square mile. A roofer who gets to those homes first — with a real local crew and not an out-of-state chaser pitch — converts 15-25% of inspections to signed contracts. Math out a 1-square-mile zone: ~50 inspections × 20% close rate × $14k average ticket = ~$140k in storm work from one event.

Set up your watch zones now, before the next system rolls through. Sign up free and add your zip codes from the Storm History tab.
